Stories from Kassel, Germany

PART 2

We trained diligently, and I was there to capture the stories and moments of the seminar. The day flew by, filled with theoretical discussions and practical exercises. Participants explored various concepts while the organisers whipped up exciting rescue scenarios, complete with unexpected twists and a talented makeup artist who brought incredible realism to the experiences.

Outdoor emergency scenarios happened in freezing weather, reminding me of my time in Canada, where I faced -40°C conditions completely off the grid, 100 miles from civilisation. While those icy memories still send shivers down my spine, I’m grateful for the teamwork of helicopters, drones, and brave firefighters who brought warmth and hope during those harsh temperatures.

Certainly, there were times I felt somewhat out of my depth among the doctors, especially when they discussed complex topics in German. However, after many years of deep reflection, my perspective changed. Facing emergencies involving infants initially shook my confidence, but becoming a mother revealededge all along; I instinctively knew what to do. that I had been absorbing knowl

Let’s take a moment to applaud the outstanding lecturers who led our English discussions! And a special shoutout to my Austrian friend, Ana! She’s a charming whirlwind of sunshine and quirky ideas. Not only did she help me swap “Guten Nacht” for “Guten Tag,” but she also made sure I didn’t get lost in translation. Here’s to friendship and laughter!

The organisers expertly crafted thrilling rescue scenarios filled with twists and turns, while adding stunning realism to the experiences. Emergency doctors strategically positioned equipment outside, ensuring that our makeup artistry participants could support each other even in the most challenging conditions. A regional volunteer fire brigade in Calden carried out a traffic accident drill with four mock casualties, demonstrating its commitment to preparedness and community safety.

As a technology enthusiast, I thank my friend Armin Jost for lending me his equipment for the seminar, which sparked my interest in Nikon. There was a Canon on one, I was balancing a shoulder and a Nikon on the other, lens-hopping like a child in a sweetshop!

It was like a comedy scene where everyone shared ideas, offering pearls of wisdom instead of punchlines—all while trying not to sound like a textbook. Who knew a room full of medical minds could be so amusingly out of touch with their brilliance?

Every evening, we looked forward to a warm dinner prepared by Hella, our caring “mom.” Ziva greeted us with her cheerful doggy smile as we enjoyed our meal, sharing laughter and reflecting on our day. After dinner, we engaged in some friendly competition.

My friends challenged me to try a crossbow, and as a passionate archer, I couldn’t resist! Exhausted but determined, I aimed and hit the bullseye on my first attempt, leaving everyone in awe. Who would have thought I’d succeed on my very first try? Feeling satisfied, I couldn’t help but dream of my next epic shot!

Participants completed an intensive eight-day, 80-hour training course organised by the Hessen Medical Association at the Elisabeth Hospital in Kassel. This excellent programme equipped them to confidently take on roles as independent doctors in the crucial field of rescue and emergency medicine.

Behind the scenes, the main team was busy imagining worst-case scenarios, closely observing reactions and presenting all possible versions of events. They ensured that no one lost hope over minor mistakes—especially in emergencies, where even small errors can be critical. Instead, they encouraged everyone to deepen their knowledge and skills.

I arrived with certain expectations, and I can confidently say this course exceeded them, particularly when the crime department and firefighters became involved. I was genuinely impressed by the hard work and dedication poured into this week-long project.
