Wisdom thoughts by dr.Peter Florjančič

Connecting generations

‘Never underestimate the influence you have on others.’

– Laurie Buchanan

Music has a very important role in my life. By the age of thirteen I was all ready singing in a young backup group with Mr.Vlado Kreslin.

Understanding the work and sweet behind the music industry, I do have a deep and great respect for every great musician artist.

Summer of 2019 was the summer colored in music festivals in my home country, Slovenia.

I got an offer from Slovenian blacksmith Mr. Lenart Perko to shoot a story and help with the performance he held on metal days. An offer I could not refuse.

“We are all dreamers playing with a variety of ideas, but only a true visionary brings the idea to life.”

– dr. Peter Florjančič

Through the years of experiences, time taught me how to cope and survive in the the unfamiliar environment with people yet unknown and land yet to be discovered, but photographing under a heavy metal vibrations while staying behind the stage in my travel mobile house for 24/7 all week, made my bones shaken.

photo: Tjaša Rozman

Sound of adventure? Yeah, coming back from Russia practically straight forward to metal days for the first time really pushed me out from my comfort zone.

I drown to Sotočje to Tolmin one day earlier to relax a beat and feel the environment. So far, so good. Everything looks clean and ready as well as Mr. Perko was all ready waiting with a perfect spot for me and my mobile home.

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”

– Albert Einstein

We went around to investigate what the festival can offer besides the music stages as well as discus about our performance.

Just a few minutes of walk from the parking spot, the emerald Soča River appeared all shining in its glory. Its headwaters spring up in the heart of Triglav National Park, under the steep peaks of the Julian Alps. It truly is one of my favorite river in Slovenia.

Food cords looked clean and were very well organized using a biodegradable materials trying to reduce plastics.

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “What is your genius?”

– Albert Einstein

Staff felt welcoming and generous, hardworking and happy.

I was quite impressed by all the diversiyy of food in the offer. Mostly vegan based, using organic and eco products with a purpose to minimize the impact of transportation and pollution.

Garbage deposit is the name itself says, it is a deposit, which means that the visitor gets the money back once they return full garbage bags to the garbage point.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.”

– Albert Einstein

I could get a clean and drinkable running water throughout the festival area, which allowed me to refill my bottles.

I was pleased to see Slovenian people aware of a major environmental issues and doing something about it.

I have traveled countries filled with plastics all around peoples houses in the deep forest or in dry areas. Plastic was there to show their status, not aiming to destroy the environment. The more plastics you have, the richer you are. “The more Coca Colla in your life.”

The problem is a lack of knowledge and quality information that is doing so. Bravo Metal days, way to go!

Connecting generations

‘Never underestimate the influence you have on others.’

– Laurie Buchanan

A few years ago my life introduced me to a very special man. An inventor who has traveled countries as I did, but his story was intertwined with different routes as mine was, till we met on crossroad. That was a ride of its one.

Shortly afterwards I met Peter, a beautiful young student Tjaša approached.

Eager to learn about mathematics behind the camera, hoping to hear the stories from across the seas. Her greatest wish was to meet dr. Peter Florjančič.

Peter on the other hand loves young people. “They are like a fresh air, a new idea”, he says.

“We are all dreamers playing with a variety of ideas, but only a true visionary brings the idea to life.”

– dr. Peter Florjančič

I have decided to connect young and old, “the energy” and “the experience” with a full respect between each other.

photo: Tjaša Rozman

I felt like a diode transmitting the energy in-between, wanted to squeeze Peter’s words through a tiny frame to memorise them.

Later on I took some time to process stories Peter shared among us.

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”

– Albert Einstein

“Everything you do is a creation, is an invention. From learning how to breathe without mom’s help, how to eat, how to talk, to walk, to listen, to love, to create, to accept, to learn, to exist…”

“Do not underestimate your ideas nor any of your experiences. The only source of knowledge is experience.”

“You do not know how to develop a patent, I can teach you that. I do not know how to communicate among nomads, you can teach me that.”

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” The question I have for you at this point of our journey together is, “What is your genius?”

– Albert Einstein

We need to learn how to improve and grow. We all share the same world and yet have our own story to follow. That is a beauty of individuality and makes us unique.

“You are your greatest friend or your greatest enemy. If you do not believe in your ideas, nobody will.”

“Everything is an invention, from your first steps to your first runn…

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving.”

…from inventing an airbag system to patenting photographic slide frame…

…from learning how to be a father to patenting a new perfume atomizer.”

“I was an inventor in my twenties, forties, sixties, eighties and still am an inventor in my hundreds, because I have chosen to believe in my ideas. I have chosen to believe in me.”

“I can assure you from my experiences, we are all born inventors. Life is an invention. If you learn how to listen and observe, you have the same power as others to develop your idea.”

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”

– Albert Einstein

There is an infinite flame in us, but it needs a constant attention for to sustain, no matter the generation.

Elders need a purpose, need to feel somebody needs them and are happy to share positive and negative results of their past projects.

Youngsters need to hear stories about victories, adventures, even scrapes and are absorbing the knowledge they once need or will consider hearing.

““In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”

– Abraham Lincoln

Life is a journey. One must involve young and old generations together and I do strongly believe it is mutually beneficial for a lifelong learning.

Emberborn, Cerknica, Slovenia

FORGING MY FIRST BLADE

Impressed by damascus knives I have received as a gift for my 30th birthday from Kyoto- Japan grown a special interest to follow the work of a blacksmith art all over the world as well as forging my own knife one day.

My colleague invited me to see the work of a young talented blacksmith whose known by the name Emberborn- this was an offer I could not refuse. Finally the time has come to forge a special blade with my identity sign on.

This project brought us in the heart of Notranjska region to a small city Cerknica. (Known by its miraculous lake Cerknica, one of the largest intermittent lakes in Europe)

A very nice and polite blacksmith Mr. Lenhart Perko invited us for a cup of coffee, introduced us with his story and explained all the necessary requirements we need to know before we proceed to his workshop.

Mr. Perko’s plan was to revive the myths and legends about Slovenian blacksmithing masters. He wanted to bring back the craft that was slowly fading away.

Studying a several hundred years old Slovenian iron working and blacksmithing tradition- besides his regular full time job, sounds as a challenging task doesn’t it?

Life of the blacksmith is tough. It requires skill in metalworking, woodworking and design as well as patience and constant attention. It is a slow process so you need to take time to do things right.

Working in the heat, noise and dust of the forges takes a man and a half.

‘Anything is possible if you have the mindset, the will and desire to do it.’

Discussing about all sorts of techniques of forging, hammering and folding the metal as well as Japanese methods wich he sincerely values and respects, over the years Mr. Perko has developed his own mechanisms, his own style.

While working with any materials he can recycle, He strongly believes his products must have a story that needs to blend with the person developing the blade. A story you can’t buy in the supermarket.

Forging my blade- step by step

Draw the blade

Get creative with your design, but keep functionality and practicality in mind.

Decide on blade length and design the tang

All rights reserved by Mismas photography.

Proper clothes for blacksmithing

Hot embers will go right through synthetic fabric materials like polyester or nylon and burn you, so they should be avoided. The best thing to wear is 100 natural fibers. Linen, cotton, and especially wool are all good things to wear.

All rights reserved by Mismas photography.

Obtain the material- steel you will use

Assemble your tools and cut the metal

Prepare the forge heat

When the steel reaches the correct temperature, it loses its magnetic properties.

Forg the metal and hammered it into shape

This is required by the metal to keep the desired properties of strength and flexibility.

Annealing- to remove internal stresses and toughen it.

Grinding

Work out the edge and point.

Hardening

Place it into a quenching tank. This quenching allows it to cool quickly and evenly which will harden the metal. Be aware that there will be fire when the blade is put into the oil.

Tempering

Tempering allows the blade to be strong but not brittle.

Sand the blade

Sharpening and polishing

HANDLE

  • Cut out your handle pieces
  • Drill a hole
  • Attach the pieces with epoxy and dry it
  • Make the final cuts and adjustments to the handle
  • Polish the handle
  • Or just work on metal one

I was impressed by Mr. Perko’s positive attitude and passion for iron and steel art, not to mention his contagious smile with a great sense of humour.

While mastering his specialty over the years he’s finally working full time as a blacksmith- creating objects as blades, sculptures, tools, agricultural implements, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils and practically anything you desire.

Not long ago his work and ‘sweat’ brought him customers from all over the Europe, so he has decided to teach and share his skills with all the metal enthusiasts. Now anyone can come out and try the blacksmithing experience.

You will learn how to work with the fire and steel, master the hammer before the hammer masters you. If I could do it with my kilos anybody can, right? Nothing to worry about, the secret lies within the right approach and the technique of hammering- It’s not about the punch.

If you believe in a value of making items of quality, want to learn something new, would like to try great Slovenian authentic food, forge your own superior unique blade and get an unforgettable story,

there is so much to do at the Emberborn, I can guarantee ‘a whale of time’ on your visit. I felt inspired almost on top of the world.

I don’t think my story with Mr. Lenhart Perko ends here. Let’s make the next project more complex and exquisite shall we? He did mention he makes the products coming to life in our hands. How about something for J.R.R.Tolkien’s enthusiasts? Maybe a sword?

Lake Bled on a solstice day

Pearl of Alps, Bled, Slovenia

My country collects  ‘pearls’ impossible to see anywhere around the world, or at least I didn’t found similar yet. (not that I am looking for them)

In 2017 I have decided to do a landscape photography project about Gorenjska Region.

A long term project, shooting Slovenian pearls only on a strategic dates, moments.

Lake Bled was one of the priorities on my list.

I checked the date of solstice, waited for everybody to go to sleep and only than I packed up my gear, drove to lake Bled and spend the night by it.

Shooting alone all night can be a long one, so I brought a company- photographer mr. Uroš Abram to join me overnight. Perfect decision!

I am avoiding tourism as much as possible, that is why I am usually photographing long exposures at night.

When shooting landscapes I prefer quietness so I can synchronise with my camera.

Correlations between camera, emotions and thoughts are boundless.

Golden sunset wished me goodnight and disappeared under the pink cloth of clouds.

In the morning greeted with a golden sunrise behind the mountains.

I remember sky glowing in all sorts of colors. It was around 3.40PM, but felt much earlier.

Vivid colors on the sky were painting the clouds above church Bled  till 8.00PM when I packed my gear and went to Vila Prešeren where I got my usual cop of black coffee.

Call it a successful night!

The Vintgar Gorge or Bled Gorge (Blejski vintgar) is a 1.6-kilometer (0.99 mi) gorge in northwestern in the municipalities of Gorje and Bled.

Carved by the Radovna River, it is the continuation of the Radovna Valley.

The stream has created many erosive features such as pools and rapids.

It terminates in the 13 m (43 ft) Šum Falls (‘Noisy falls’) the largest river waterfall in Slovenia.

I felt like the long wait was paying off. I got a few winners it was time to pack my gear and slowly go home to my worm bad, when in the last moment I heard the scream.

My friends photo equipment was in the river and not long after so was he. Luckily everything ended well.

soft and formless, Vintgar Gorge, Slovenia

What a night! Lost some valuable equipment there but very lucky considering the circumstances.

Be like water my friend.

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water.

Water has no shape, yet it can take any shape in which it is placed.

The softest element on earth, yet penetrates  the hardest rock.

Be like water making its way through cracks.

(Inspiring quotes by Lee Jun-fan)

Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

On the other side, Jamnik, Slovenia

Follow the light

Observing spectacular landscape, panoramic view of 6 churches in a surrounding, including church Brezje and church Jamnik always made me wonder what’s on the other side.

On sunny days golden light covers tops of the churches. On rainy days fog holds them in to mist of wonders.

.

It was time to stop this nonsense, to stop wondering and hitt the road.

I called my colleague mr. Uroš Abram with whom I previously shared some amazing landscapes, grabbed some food, packed my photo gear with some chairs as well and went on to explore the other side.

Day of a new moon, dark night, the end of August sounds as a perfect night for some star shooting doesn’t it?

This time I wasn’t happy with the results of my images.

All rights reserved by Mismas photography.

After a bit of a brainstorming I’ve remembered there is still some equipped left in the car from my previous shooting.

Bring all the lights out, let’s have some fun!

I opened the camera shutter for a longer time and start to draw lines while slowly walking towards the church, with a help of LED lights in my hand, on my legs and head.

Of course I didn’t succeed at once. In fact, I had quite a sporty night, doing a lot of walking, but I enjoyed it very much.

After some walks, I finally found the right rhythm between the shutter time and distance.

A rose light behind the church was a great ending of an overnight project: on the other side.

Time to pack our equipment and go home.
